A Newsweek poll across 11 states and 28 competitive congressional districts found that most Democratic and Republican voters support increasing SNAP benefits for people who live alone. Those recipients currently receive $170 per month on average. The median Democrat supported $250 for people living alone, compared with $200 among Republicans. Democrats favored an average of $600 for single mothers, while Republicans chose $554, compared with a current average of $530 a month. Voters also supported government incentives for fruits and vegetables, with approval ranging from 78% to 97% among Democrats and 68% to 93% among Republicans.
Why this matters: If adopted, higher SNAP benefits and fruit and vegetable incentives could increase purchasing power and demand at stores serving SNAP customers. The poll signals support for these changes, but it does not report a policy change.
