Total food and beverage unit sales fell 0.9% during the four weeks ending July 26 compared with a year earlier. Fresh produce units fell 4.7% from July 2025, with volume down 3.7%. Frozen food units rose 0.2%, led by a 5.1% increase in frozen fruit and vegetable units, while refrigerated food units rose 1.2%. Refrigerated and frozen plant-based meat alternatives totaled 11.1 million units, down 8.4% from a year ago.

Why this matters: Independent grocers may need to review orders and shelf space as shoppers pull back in several fresh categories while frozen and refrigerated foods show stronger demand. The decline in plant-based meat alternatives may also affect assortment decisions.
