More than 5.3 million fewer people received SNAP benefits in April 2026, when enrollment stood at just over 37 million, according to USDA data. The government implemented new SNAP work requirements on Feb. 1. Arizona recorded a 54.8% decrease in SNAP benefits, while Florida, Georgia and Louisiana each saw declines of more than 20%; Alaska was the only state without a reduction. Seven Save A Lot stores in Chicago closed in July, and the article says SNAP was primarily to blame. Ahold Delhaize said SNAP reductions cut its U.S. sales growth by 40 basis points in the second quarter and will affect growth by between 60 and 80 basis points for the full year.

Why this matters: Independent stores that rely on SNAP sales may face lower revenue as enrollment and benefits decline. The Chicago closures show how the change can affect store operations in communities with many SNAP shoppers.
