MANNA FoodBank in Asheville, N.C. has opened a facility with rooftop solar panels and 16,500 square feet for cold storage. The food bank also received two solar-powered mobile containers in June from Footprint Project. The Cooler Bees units use solar panels, battery storage, and air conditioning, and can be moved by truck for emergency cooling, cold storage, or mobile pantry use. After Hurricane Helene, MANNA relied on diesel refrigerated trucks for over a year and a half to store milk, eggs, and produce.
Why this matters: Mobile solar cooling could give food-access organizations backup cold storage during disasters without depending entirely on diesel trucks. The units can also support regular operations when they are not needed for emergency response.
