Dollar General and Dollar Tree reported comparable-store sales increases of more than 3% in their quarters ended July 31 and Aug. 1, respectively. Dollar General's net sales rose 5.2% to $11.3 billion, while Dollar Tree's sales rose 7% to $4.9 billion. The results were stronger than recent supermarket results, with Kroger's comparable-store sales up 1% and Albertsons' down by a similar percentage. Both retailers said they used tariff refunds to help lower prices, including a $383 million refund received by Dollar Tree.
Why this matters: The results show dollar stores gaining sales momentum while supermarket results remain weak. Independent grocers may face added competition for grocery trips, especially in consumables and price-sensitive purchases.
