Researchers compared 50 common grocery items at 35 stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with price surveys in January 2025, August-September 2025, January-February 2026 and August 2026. The average basket was $353.14 in August, up 0.79% from $350.85 in January. Aldi had the lowest basket at $246.13, followed by Walmart at $265.85, Lidl at $275.52 and Market Basket at $278.33. Gristedes had the highest basket at $592.79, while Sprouts Farmers Market was at $479.65.

Why this matters: The report gives independent grocers and food-access groups a regional benchmark for a 50-item grocery basket. The difference between Aldi's $246.13 basket and Gristedes' $592.79 basket may help communities assess local price gaps.
