Private brand sales are growing faster than name-brand sales, and Spins identified Gen Z and millennials as key drivers. A survey of just over 1,000 consumers in January found that 40% of millennials and Gen Zers follow a specific diet, while 86% consume Hispanic and South American cuisine and 83% consume East Asian food. Store brand refrigerated meat and seafood posted the largest dollar gain among private brands, up 41%, compared with an 11% increase for fresh meat and seafood from name brands. Spins said private brands have also seen average retail prices rise more slowly than name brands.

Why this matters: Independent grocers can use private-label products to respond to younger shoppers' dietary and global cuisine preferences. Slower private-brand price growth may also help stores offer value as shoppers face grocery inflation concerns.
