Dollar Tree and Dollar General reported strong consumable sales in the second quarter of 2026 as shoppers focused on low-priced goods. Dollar Tree's consumable sales grew almost 6%, while discretionary sales rose less than 2%. Dollar General said customer response was very strong to its first-quarter program clustering $1 frozen foods in one cooler, and it is considering expanding the set. Placer.ai data showed Dollar Tree foot traffic rose nearly 5% in July after declines from March to May, while Dollar General traffic increased between roughly 1% and 2% year over year in each month from March to July.

Why this matters: Dollar stores are strengthening their competition for budget-conscious shoppers, especially in consumables and frozen foods. Independent grocers may need to watch how low-price assortments affect customer demand in those categories.
