Instacart reported that searches containing "protein" rose 12.7% year over year and searches containing "fiber" rose 26.4% in its 2026 Protein & Fiber Report. Eight of the 10 categories that gained the most share of items sold in the first half of 2026 were high in protein or fiber. Tinned fish grew 51% year over year, while protein drinks rose 15%, protein bars 9%, and cottage cheese 10%. Sweet potatoes climbed 28%, frozen edamame 25%, and yams 20%.

Why this matters: Independent grocers can use these demand signals when reviewing shelf space, promotions, and product mix. The report points to growing customer interest across both packaged protein products and fiber-rich produce and pantry items.
