Heinen's closed its grocery store in Cleveland's historic Cleveland Trust Building on July 31. The city provided $250,000 in incentives in 2022 to help keep the store financially viable. North Union Farmers Market opened a six-week pilot at Mall B, with up to six farms, food trucks, and other local vendors on opening day. The market will use the pilot to decide whether to return to Cleveland after it ends.

Why this matters: The pilot gives Cleveland officials and local food producers a way to test demand for downtown food retail after the grocery store closed. Independent grocers and food-access groups can watch whether the market reaches local residents and workers who used the former store.
