Hannaford Supermarkets is partnering with local farms and growers to operate in-store farm stands across the Northeast. The grocer works with more than 125 local farms, offering seasonal items to customers. Partners include Leary Farm in Saco, Maine, which supplies sweet corn and other seasonal vegetables, and Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, N.H., which grows fruits and vegetables. The Hannaford brothers began selling locally grown produce from a cart on the Portland, Maine waterfront in 1883.

Why this matters: The farm stands give local growers another retail channel and give grocery stores a way to offer seasonal products from nearby farms. The model may be relevant to independent grocers seeking local supplier partnerships.
