Grocery retailers are revising loyalty programs with digital coupons, customized pricing, members-only events, tiered programs, and automatic rewards redemption. Lidl launched Lidl Plus in the U.S., while Sprouts Farmers Market added product previews and member voting to its rewards program. Natural Grocers' {N}power program combines rotating deals, articles, recipes, games, and a points system in which shoppers spend a dollar to get a point. Circle K rewards a visit after customers buy at least five gallons of fuel or spend $3 or more in its stores, while Weigel's uses four tiers based on monthly visit counts.

Why this matters: Independent grocers can use loyalty programs to show what makes their stores different and to offer value to shoppers who may not be ready to commit to one primary store. Visit-based or category-specific rewards may also give smaller operators ways to engage customers beyond traditional points systems.
