The average price of diesel reached a record $5.85 per gallon, increasing transportation costs for groceries and other goods. The price is about 58% above the $3.71 per gallon price cited by the American Automobile Association. Demand for diesel is also rising for farm machinery during the fall harvest and for heating, while some forecasters expect agricultural commodity costs to push grocery prices higher. AAA reported a national average gasoline price of $4.14 per gallon for Labor Day travelers.
Why this matters: Independent grocers may face higher delivery and restocking costs, with the greatest pressure on produce, meat, and other perishables that require frequent transport. Higher fuel and agricultural costs can also add pressure to store margins and consumer food bills.
