Kroger added more than 1 million high-income households but lost 700,000 lower-income households over the past year, according to Numerator. Kroger customers moved over $12 billion in consumer packaged goods spending to Amazon, Walmart and Costco, with Kroger directly losing more than $1 billion. Spending fell by $715 million at Kroger-branded stores and $516 million at Ralphs, while Fry's Food Stores grew by $365 million. Beverages, candy and canned goods grew by $800 million, while household products declined by $97 million and health and beauty products fell by $178 million.
Why this matters: Independent grocers competing for consumer packaged goods spending may face pressure from the same shifts toward large retailers and online shopping. The lower-income pullback also points to the need to watch how changes in household budgets affect store sales.
