Illinois announced over $26 million in grants through the Illinois Grocery Initiative. The funding includes $20.8 million for new stores, $750,000 for equipment upgrades, and $4.5 million for a Grocery Rescue Program to help reopen stores that closed within 12 months. Applications are open, and grantees will be selected through a competitive process. Since the initiative launched in 2024, the state has distributed $19 million, including nearly $17 million for eight new grocery stores and $2 million for equipment upgrades at 14 stores.

Why this matters: Independent grocers and cooperatives with fewer than 500 employees and no more than four grocery locations may have a new source of funding for store acquisition, repairs, equipment, and some operating costs. The programs could support grocery access in low-access and food-insecure communities.
