Illinois is making resources available through the Invest in Illinois Fund to attract a buyer for the former Tyson Foods beef facility in Joslin and return it to productive use. The state is preparing a notice of funding opportunity for qualified proposals, but has not committed to a specific company or a specific amount of money. Tyson's closure of the Joslin facility affected nearly 2,500 employees. A rapid response event in Moline brought together more than 1,000 affected workers, employers, and workforce partners from Illinois and Iowa.
Why this matters: A new operator could restore beef processing capacity that serves Illinois grocery stores and restaurants, while also supporting jobs tied to the facility and regional food production. The state has not selected an operator, so the effect on local supply and employment remains uncertain.
