Costco's grocery market share reached 8.3% at the end of June, compared with 7.6% in mid-2024, according to Numerator. Its fresh comparable-store sales rose in the mid-single digits, led by bakery and meat, while YouGov found that U.S. consumers, particularly young consumers, viewed Costco's value more favorably than Aldi's despite Costco's paid membership. Amazon's Prime Day will run Oct. 6-7, with deals including organic Honeycrisp apples at $2 per 2-lb. bag, ground beef and Genoa salami for under $3, and $1 items such as hummus and cherry tomatoes; grocery purchases made up 16% of Prime shoppers during the event that ran June 23-26. Meijer opened a 75,000-square-foot store in Fishers, Indiana, and a 159,000-square-foot supercenter in Plymouth Township, Michigan, while Aldi will bring back its Big Bag on Oct. 14 after more than 45,000 shoppers claimed the previous release within minutes.
Why this matters: Costco's rising share, fresh-food sales, and value perception may add pressure on independent grocers competing for grocery spending, especially in bakery and meat. Amazon's grocery promotions also show how online events can compete for household food purchases.
