A pair of California law firms filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court alleging that Aldi charges delivery, expedited fulfillment, and convenience fees to customers using SNAP benefits through Instacart or Aldi Express. The suit seeks class-action status and alleges that the fees are charged for nonfood items and improperly affect low-income shoppers. Aldi began accepting SNAP payments for online delivery through Instacart in November 2020. Aldi says customers must use another payment method for delivery, ordering, and convenience fees, tips, and non-SNAP-eligible items.

Why this matters: The lawsuit highlights a cost issue for food-access programs and grocers offering online SNAP ordering. Customers may need another payment method for fees that SNAP cannot cover.
