Food Rescue US and Toast announced DonorLink, a free restaurant food donation tool integrated into Toast's restaurant system with funding from a ReFED grant. The tool is live in all 25 states where Food Rescue US operates, and Toast is used by over 100,000 restaurants. Before its public release, eight beta testers logged about 400 pickups through the integration during a six-month period. Food Rescue US said the system can support smaller, more frequent deliveries of fresh or prepared food, with restaurant donations in transit for maybe 15 minutes on average, and receiving facilities must request those food types and have suitable storage.
Why this matters: The integration could reduce the staff time and coordination that can prevent restaurants from donating surplus food. Food banks and pantries may need to assess their cold storage, loading dock, and food-type capacity before signing up to receive these donations.
