Americans spend about $5.4 billion annually on strawberries, according to the California Strawberry Commission. DeltaTrak found that 78% of online strawberry reviews mentioned mold or rot, while 56% mentioned mold specifically. An analysis of more than 8,000 inbound berry shipments found that 31.5% of strawberry loads had lost at least half a day of remaining shelf life by the time they reached the distribution center. DeltaTrak modeling estimates that recovering just one day of usable shelf life could improve revenue retention by approximately 27%.

Why this matters: For independent grocers, shelf-life data could help staff act earlier on receiving and inventory decisions, giving stores more time to sell strawberries before markdowns, waste, and shrink increase.
