Title: The most important thing a manager can do: walk the store with purpose
Post by: Viable Food on Aug 15, 2026, 08:23 AM
A manager can spend an entire day answering emails, working on schedules, dealing with vendors, solving staffing problems, and putting out fires without ever really seeing the store.

That is dangerous.

One of the most important things a grocery manager can do is walk the store with purpose every single day.

A real store walk is not a lap around the building. It is an intentional look at the business through several sets of eyes.

Start with the customer.

Then look through the eyes of an operator.

Then look for the thing that has become "normal" only because everyone sees it every day.

A broken sign. A dead spot in a case. A stack of product blocking a customer path. A dirty corner. A cart that has been sitting in the same place for three days. A shelf that everyone has stopped noticing.

The purpose of the walk is not to create a giant list and criticize the team. It is to see the store clearly enough to decide what matters most today.

A strong manager walk should lead to priorities, coaching, follow-up, and action.

For the operators and managers here: What is one thing you always check on your store walk, no matter how busy the day gets?
