Title: Cross-training is not just a staffing solution
Post by: Viable Food on Aug 15, 2026, 08:32 AM
Cross-training is usually discussed as a way to cover call-offs.

That is useful, but it is only part of the value.

When employees understand more than one part of the store, they can make better decisions because they see how the pieces connect.

A cashier who understands stocking may recognize why an item is missing.

A stocker who understands receiving may catch discrepancies.

A department employee who understands basic front-end operations may be able to help during an unexpected rush.

A future supervisor who has worked across departments has a much better picture of how the store actually functions.

Good cross-training can improve:

The danger is using "cross-trained" to mean "everyone should be able to do everything with no real training."

That creates frustration instead of flexibility.

What positions in a grocery store benefit most from cross-training, and what combinations have worked well for you?
