The FDA proposed requiring food companies to notify it about ingredients they self-affirm as Generally Recognized as Safe, or GRAS, and explain why they consider them safe. The proposal would cover new ingredients and ingredients already on the market through self-affirmed GRAS, while companies with prior FDA "no safety questions" determinations would be exempt. The FDA said submissions would be posted in public online inventories, but companies could still put ingredients on the market while the agency evaluates them. The agency would make a pre-filing decision within 45 days and a safety determination within 180 days. The proposal would be open for public comment for 120 days.

Why this matters: Independent grocers and cooperatives may gain more public information for reviewing ingredients used by suppliers. A federal notification system could also reduce the complexity and costs associated with differing state ingredient rules.
