An Acosta Group shopper study found that 34% of shoppers use AI tools to shop, and nearly half of Gen Z shoppers said AI influenced recent purchase decisions. AI use is highest in frequently purchased categories, including grocery and household items, and health and wellness products. Fifty-five percent of Gen Z shoppers who use AI tools use it while shopping in store. Only 22% of shoppers using Gen AI for shopping trusted agents to make purchasing decisions for them in 2026, compared with 35% of millennials.

Why this matters: Independent grocers may need accurate, consistent product information across online platforms so AI tools can find and recommend their products. Clear policies on shopper data could also affect trust as customers use AI during store visits.
