Brand Finance found $73B in global food value at risk from changing consumption linked to GLP-1 medications. Lay's was the most exposed food brand, with 45% of its brand value in categories at structural risk, while Doritos, Hershey's, Cheetos, Kellogg's and Reese's were also among the most exposed. Around 11% of U.S. adults currently take appetite-suppressing GLP-1 medications, and a Cornell study found grocery spending fell 6% in households with at least one person taking the drugs. Confectionery and chocolate, along with savory snacks, accounted for 53% of the brand value at risk in the analysis.

Why this matters: Independent grocers may need to watch demand for snacks and confectionery while considering products tied to health, functionality and hydration needs. Changes in household grocery spending could also affect sales planning in communities where GLP-1 use is growing.
