Numerator reported that prices for everyday household purchases rose 0.7% in September 2026, after declines in August and July. Prices were 2.1% higher than a year earlier and 34% above January 2018 levels. Low-income consumers saw prices rise 36% since January 2018, while Gen Z consumers saw a 40.8% increase and the largest year-over-year increase in September, at 3.1%. Numerator said 39.6% of more than 2,000 U.S. consumers named rising prices as their top concern for the coming year.

Why this matters: Independent grocers serving low-income or younger shoppers may face greater customer sensitivity to price increases. The figures can help food-access organizations identify groups that may need added support as household costs rise.
