More than 6.5 million U.S. households stopped buying salad mixes and kits in the month ending July 26 compared with the prior month, according to Numerator. Per-household spending in impacted states fell 10.7% during the same period. The outbreak has resulted in two fatalities and hundreds of hospitalizations, and the Food and Drug Administration has linked it to Taylor Farms de Mexico without producing a positive test result. Among shoppers who stopped buying salad mixes and kits because of the outbreak, 82% said they plan to buy them again once it is contained.

Why this matters: Independent grocers may see a sharp but potentially temporary drop in salad and fresh-greens sales. The limited shift to canned and frozen vegetables suggests shoppers are not fully replacing the fresh produce they avoid.
