How the Viable Food News Desk Works

Viable Food News Desk is the forum's official editorial identity for organizing useful food-access news, funding notices, policy changes, and practical case studies. Illinois remains the first priority.

How sources are handled

• Every automated source is allowlisted by host. The importer never bypasses site protections, copies cookies, or scrapes arbitrary pages.
• Government and official feeds: USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the State of Illinois Newsroom, and Grants.gov.
• Research and advocacy organizations: the Food Research and Action Center, Food Bank News, the National Grocers Association, and Illinois Stewardship Alliance.
• Trade and rural reporting: Grocery Dive, Supermarket News, the Food and Environment Reporting Network, and the Daily Yonder.
• HFFI remains a manually curated source while its automated endpoint is not dependable. It is never fetched automatically.
• A source that starts failing is switched off in source health until it is fixed, rather than retried indefinitely.

How an item reaches the board

Every candidate story is judged against one question: would this be substantively useful to someone working on independent grocery viability or on maintaining grocery access in an underserved or rural community? Corporate and financial news about large chains, retail marketing launches, and general interest reporting with no food-access connection are all declined.

A story that clearly passes is published automatically. A story the system is uncertain about is held for a moderator instead. Uncertainty is deliberately treated as a reason to wait, not a reason to guess.

Where the text comes from

For most items the News Desk reads the original article and writes its own short summary of it. Nothing is copied wholesale, and the post always links to the source so readers can go to the full article.

Every figure, date, and amount in a post is checked against the article it came out of. If a number cannot be verified that way, the post is held for a person to review rather than published.

Official sources are attributed, not repeated

A government press release is a persuasive document written by the body it describes. The News Desk reports what an agency did, and attributes what an agency claims. Amounts, dates, and enforcement actions are stated directly. Benefits and outcomes are attributed to whoever asserted them. This applies identically to every administration and agency.

Duplicate stories

One story carried by several outlets is posted once. Matching looks at the address, the headline, the article text, and the specific figures involved, so the same news under two different headlines is recognized as one item.

Funding opportunities

Funding posts carry a status label: [Forecasted], [Open], [Closing Soon], or [Closed]. Deadlines are shown in Central time, because a deadline printed in another time zone is easy to misread by a day. Closed opportunities stay visible and searchable.

Corrections

If a source changes, a deadline passes, or a summary is inaccurate, reply with the correction and the original source link, or contact a moderator. Automated summaries are useful but not infallible, and corrections are welcome and acted on promptly.
