Toronto-based North York Harvest Food Bank generates between $3 million and $4 million a year through FoodReach, a social enterprise that sells food at wholesale prices and provides logistics services to community organizations. FoodReach serves just shy of 300 sites, and its double-digit sales growth supports the food bank alongside the $5 million or so it generates annually in fundraising. The food bank will open a new hub in December that will be three times the size of its current facility, allowing it to bring in small farmers and local businesses for institutional contracts.

Why this matters: FoodReach offers independent food-access organizations a model for earning revenue while providing lower-cost food and logistics services to nonprofits. Its approach could also help connect small local producers with institutional buyers through shared warehousing, procurement, and delivery infrastructure.
