Fresh seafood volume sales fell 0.4% for the 52 weeks ending July 12, while average category prices rose 2.6% to $9.94 a pound, Circana reports. Fresh salmon volume sales rose 5%, with prices up 1.2% to $11.61 a pound. Fresh shrimp sales fell 6.9% as prices rose 7.7%, while fresh crab sales fell 17.8% as prices rose 13.1%. Analysts said retailers may need to adjust seafood products and presentations as shoppers weigh price, health, versatility, experimentation, and interactive experiences differently.

Why this matters: Independent grocers can use sales and shopper responses to refine seafood pricing, product mix, and merchandising by customer segment. Emphasizing value and offering discovery or sampling experiences may help stores address cost concerns and differing shopper priorities.
