Numerator data shows Gen Z added 77 million trips and $3.4B in spending at Walmart, while households earning over $100K added $8.9B and 115 million trips, mainly online. Higher-income households increased spending by $3.6B across beverages, snacks, candy and frozen food, while Gen Z added nearly $1.2B in those categories. Boomers made 160 million fewer CPG trips to Walmart stores, contributing to a $6.2B decline, while Walmart.com recaptured $3.5B and Amazon gained 1.5 share points and $5B in boomer CPG spending. Lower-income households shifted $7.8B away from Walmart stores and added $7.3B at Walmart.com, while Amazon gained 1.3 share points and $6.8B in CPG spending from those shoppers. Gen Z made over 390M trips with Walmart private label products in the basket, while Walmart recovered just $780M of the $2.4B in boomer private label spending it lost in stores.

Why this matters: Independent grocers can use the pattern as a reminder that online convenience is reshaping spending among higher-income, boomer and lower-income shoppers, while everyday food categories and private label remain key areas of competition.
