Kroger's private label sales outpaced national brands during the second quarter of fiscal 2026, and private label penetration rose by about half of a percentage point. Private Selection sales increased by more than 14%, led by ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat meals. Kroger added over 600 natural and organic items during the quarter. Numerator reported that Kroger's private label sales in produce, meat, seafood, deli and prepared foods, and in-store bakery rose by about $420 million over the 12-month period that ended July 31.

Why this matters: Independent grocers may see an opportunity to strengthen store-brand and value-focused offerings, including prepared meals and natural and organic products. Kroger's results also show the pressure shoppers are placing on retailers to justify price increases.
