FEMA denied Illinois' request for individual and public assistance after severe storms, derecho, flooding, and tornadoes affected communities across the state in August. In a letter dated October 7th, FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton said assistance for Champaign, Cook, Ford, Fulton, McLean, Tazewell, Vermilion, and Will counties was "not warranted." Illinois said it will appeal, citing property and infrastructure damage, power outages, and flooding. A state disaster proclamation has made additional state resources available, including funding, personnel, equipment, and streamlined procurement.

Why this matters: For independent grocers and food-access groups in the affected counties, the denial means the requested federal assistance is not available unless the appeal succeeds. State resources and agency support remain available under Illinois' disaster proclamation.
