A store-level analysis compared manufacturer-rated annual energy use for existing refrigeration with a like-for-like replacement using current natural-refrigerant equipment. Estimated use fell from about 746,700 kWh to about 675,100 kWh per year, a reduction of 9.6 percent, or 71,700 kWh. At $0.135 per kWh, the study calculated about $800 a month and just under $10,000 a year in energy savings for a single store, without assuming higher electricity prices. The same store spent an average of $90,000 a year on maintenance, while new refrigerant management and reporting rules were estimated at $80,000 per year per store.

Why this matters: For an independent grocer, comparing refrigeration energy use with maintenance and compliance costs can show whether replacement or a lease structure fits a limited capital budget.
